What does ‘the perfect day’ mean to you? If it’s feeling the kiss of the sun on your face and the tickle of white sand between your toes then it means a dreamy destination wedding in paradise. Conrad Hotels & Resorts’ expert wedding planners—in Bali, Koh Samui and the Maldives — are ready to help make even the most magical of wedding dreams a reality.
If the last few years have been about having the picture perfect, artfully au-naturel wedding (thanks Pinterest), then 2016 is the year the experience became altogether less… formulaic. “Couples today want a wedding that showcases who they are, that’s a fun experience for their guests and that won’t look or feel dated — ever,” says Alison Laesser-Keck of VLD Events, who was named one of the top wedding planners in the world by VOGUE and Harper’s Bazaar.

Another expert in the field of nuptial bliss is Mohamed Mauroof, who started working at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island six years ago. As Pre-bookings and Wedding Coordinator, Mauroof estimates that he has planned over 800 ceremonies in the last five years.

“The concept of ‘barefoot bride’ is coupled with the ever-growing trend of destination weddings,” notes Mauroof. “Whether the bride wants a glamorous statement or a casual beachside affair, beach weddings are a blank canvas for the bride to add her own personal style and flair to her wedding day. It is a trend that will continue to evolve and become even more creative in styling and themes.”

In a world saturated with social-media clichés, this element of personalization is a key factor for many couples today. After all, who wants a wedding that’s already done the rounds on Instagram? One way of ensuring a unique theme is to base the wedding around how the couple met. This is an increasingly popular trend at Conrad Bali, where a dedicated wedding specialist is on hand to bring this personal inspiration to life. A recent, particularly memorable wedding was one couple’s three-part extravaganza. The team at Conrad Bali delivered an extraordinary evening, with a Hollywood-awards theme that segued into a Caribbean-night welcome dinner, followed by a Midnight in Paris reception.

An alternate way of creating a one-of-a-kind ceremomy is to incorporate the local flavors of the chosen destination. At Conrad Koh Samui, there is an option for a traditional Thai wedding ceremony complete with a parade of dancers and musicians. Fresh seafood and lobsters caught by local fishermen, right out of the Aow Thai Sea, adds another touch of authenticity that would be impossible to replicate elsewhere.

“Moving away from the traditional wedding, the beach-wedding concept has become more famous worldwide — not only at Conrad Koh Samui,” says the hotel’s in-house wedding planner. “We usually see the barefoot bride in a beautiful wedding gown, surrounded by the beauty of Koh Samui’s nature, walking on a white sandy beach and celebrating her big day with family and friends.”

It’s an evocative image, and one that translates into beautiful photography. The natural light of these exotic locales, combined with ocean views and tropical flora, are a photographer’s dream.

“I find that the type of photos requested by the bride and groom does depend largely on their own traditions and personality,” says Mauroof. “Some like very formal posed images, whereas others opt to have a bit more fun. We once had a bride go waist-deep into the water with her gown on for a photo! Overall, I do think candid photos are now what the couples really appreciate.”

In keeping with this more informal approach, beachside ceremonies are most likely to feature a relaxed dress code and gifting etiquette. Think loose and floaty Temperley dresses as opposed to structured Vera Wang gowns. The idea is to embrace that barefoot island life. So, while the outfits might be prêt-à-porter, the experience itself is anything but off-the-rack.
