Joao Seixas is the private host of the signature suites at Conrad Algarve. We spoke with him about what to do on the Algarve coast and how to best enjoy this coastal retreat. Known for its natural beauty, the picturesque Portuguese region features golden beaches, vast vineyards and nature parks from the mountains to the shore.
What is the first thing that guests should do in Algarve?
They should immediately lie back at our Sereno pool deck, relax and enjoy one of the most pleasant places in the world.
What local signature dishes should people try?
Guests should experience the cataplana and a mouthwatering mariscada (mix of seafood). Named after the cookware in which it’s prepared—a domed pot traditionally made of copper—the cataplana is an aromatic, tomato- and pepper-based seafood stew. It’s packed with fish, clams and other shellfish. And its origins can be traced back many centuries.
Where are the best selfie spots?
That’s a very difficult question, as there are hundreds of amazing spots. I would recommend the vast and unspoiled sand banks of the Ria Formosa, the caves of Benagil, the titanic cliffs of Cabo de São Vicente or the top of the Silves Castle walls.
What should guests do activity-wise?
It depends on the guests. Some are more conservative, so I’d recommend a wine tasting in one of the many vineyards or a day at sea on a luxurious yacht. For the more adventurous, a Jeep safari in the Algarvian countryside or a tour on a speedboat to discover the Ria Formosa. Then, the perfect ending to the day would be spent at one of the many local islands to savor delicious oysters and Champagne. For the adrenaline-affectionate, there’s accelerating a muscle car at Algarve Motorsports Park in Portimão.
What is the perfect Algarve souvenir?
A shell from one of the many amazing white-sand beaches is a wonderful way to remember your time on the Algarve coast.
