The design was handled by the Japanese studio Nendo, founded in 2002 by Oki Sato as a product design and interiors agency and now one of the most prolific and high profile of all Japanese design houses. Siam Discovery represents the studio’s biggest project to date and is a full-on laboratory of different ways of treating a store, from the interlocking grids of light that form the façade through to the many individual boutiques within. A cascade of geometric forms of varying scales turns a walk through the store into a voyage of discovery, with brands and designers encouraged to create and curate one-off products, special editions and unique collections. Big names such as Diesel, Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake rub up against small local designers and boutique brands, while Nendo’s shop-fittings run the gamut from jewel-like light fixtures to expansive spaces for the likes of Yohji Yamamoto and Dressedundressed. Themed zones include His Lab and Her Lab, as well as spaces dedicated to new technology, lighting and streetwear.
