Located beneath the sidewalks and squares of the rebuilt World Trade Center, the new Westfield wends its way between the basements of the new skyscrapers, including the 541-meter One World Trade Center, culminating in a dramatic two-level gallery set directly beneath Santiago Calatrava’s Oculus—the defining architectural feature of the new $4 billion PATH station that provides a vital transportation backbone for the city. Below an array of thousands of tonnes of curving steel beams, arranged to form twin ‘wings’ above the site, there is now direct access to over 100 stores, along with restaurants and cafés. One of the centerpieces is a new Apple store, while small upscale retailers including Smythson, Caudalie and Penhaligon’s also find a place, alongside the monumental dining and food experience provided by Eataly. The emphasis is on light and space—nearly 34,000 square meters — as well as close proximity to Downtown.
